Pakistan announces three-day Eid ul Fitr holidays

The federal government of Pakistan has officially declared a three-day public holiday for Eid ul Fitr, beginning Friday, March 31, and concluding on Sunday, April 2. A notification issued by the Cabinet Division confirmed the holiday schedule.

The Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee, alongside its regional committees, will convene on the evening of March 30 to confirm the sighting of the Shawwal crescent moon. The meeting, set to take place at the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony, will involve religious scholars, meteorologists, and other experts. They will assess moon sighting reports from across the country to officially announce the start of Eid celebrations.

This year, scientific models and astronomical calculations by Pakistan’s Space & Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco) suggest the crescent moon will likely be visible on March 30, aligning Eid ul Fitr on March 31. However, an official announcement will depend on the unaided-eye observation of the crescent, a religious practice in Islam.

Eid ul Fitr marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan, during which Muslims fast from dawn to sunset. The holiday is celebrated with prayers, family gatherings, charity, and festive meals.
