Chhaava blamed Vicky Kaushal for the Nagpur rioting over the mausoleum of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb.

Vijay Kaushal’s Chhaava, a historical action film about Sambhaji Maharaj, the second king of the Maratha Empire, has caused a political and communal uproar over its portrayal of Aurangzeb, the 17th-century Mughal emperor.

Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has linked the film to Nagpur’s present violence, saying it has incited hate against the late emperor and caused fights around his mausoleum.

The violence began after members of the Indian right-wing Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) burned an Aurangzeb effigy and his mausoleum while screaming for his removal from Aurangabad.

“Chhaava movie sparked anger against Aurangzeb. Fadnavis remarked, “Everyone must keep Maharashtra peaceful,” according to Hindustan Times. He also called Monday’s Nagpur violence, which followed rumors about a right-wing gang burning a religious book, “pre-planned” and “a conspiracy.”

“Specific houses and establishments were targeted by the mob,” he said, urging caution and not letting past grievances undermine society now.

Nagpur saw massive disturbances on Monday, torching multiple vehicles and injuring over a dozen individuals, including at least 15 police officers. Critical condition was reported for one officer.

Fadnavis condemned the violence and promised stern action. “I have told the police commissioner to take whatever strict steps are necessary,” he told the assembly, promising to uphold order at all costs.

To avert escalation, various city neighborhoods have an indefinite curfew. Kotwali, Ganeshpeth, Lakadganj, Pachpaoli, Shantinagar, Sakkardara, Nandanvan, Imamwada, Yashodhara Nagar, and Kapil Nagar are curfew zones. The limits will apparently last until further notice.

Chhaava fans defaced Akbar Road and Humayun Road signboards in February. A group allegedly poured black paint on signboards and pasted Shivaji images. Signboards were restored after defacing. A intoxicated fan ripped the screen at a Gujarat Chhaava screening. He was arrested.

Saurabh Shukla, a journalist, linked the Nagpur clash to Chhaava. “After watching Chhaava, people came out with sticks and rods for Aurangzeb. Actor Vicky Kaushal and producer earned [INR 5.53 billion]. In their Mercedes, they’re filming another flick. Shukla stated, “You break each other’s heads shouting slogans on the streets.”

Chhaava, based on the legacy of a Maratha warrior who resisted Mughal control, has received mixed reviews for its portrayal of Aurangzeb. The makers have not responded.

The film was criticized for exaggerating Hindu torture during Aurangzeb era.
