PM supports struggling footballer in Pakistan with aid and job offer

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has stepped in to support Muhammad Riaz, a Pakistani footballer who made headlines after a viral video showed him selling jalebis to make ends meet. Riaz, who represented Pakistan in the 2018 Asian Games, received a cheque of Rs2.5 million ($8,916) and was promised a government job in the federal department of his choice.

The Prime Minister called for a comprehensive strategy to ensure financial stability for athletes representing Pakistan internationally. “Pakistani youth are a valuable asset, and we must provide the support they need to shine at the global level,” Sharif stated during his meeting with Riaz.

Sharif’s initiative comes amidst criticism of the government and sports authorities for neglecting athletes despite their contributions. He emphasized efforts to improve sports facilities and sustainable employment opportunities for players.

Riaz expressed his gratitude, noting this support would allow him to continue promoting football in Pakistan. Recently, the Pakistan Football League also announced a cash prize and a prominent role for Riaz in the league as part of its commitment to developing the sport.

Pakistan’s football scene has long faced challenges such as insufficient investment, weak infrastructure, and poor administrative management, contributing to its struggle to reach its potential. However, this move signals a positive step toward addressing these issues and valuing the country’s sporting talent.
