Pakistan introduces digital ID cards to advance digital transformation

On March 10, 2025, Pakistan’s National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) celebrated its 25th anniversary by launching the country’s first dematerialized ID card. This initiative aligns with the government’s Digital Pakistan vision, aiming to replace physical ID cards with digital certificates accessible via the Pak ID Mobile Application.

Interior Minister Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi praised this development as a significant move toward digital identity. A pilot project for the fully digital identity is scheduled to commence on August 14, 2025, coinciding with Pakistan’s Independence Day.

Over the past decade, Pakistan has made notable strides in digital transformation, with mobile broadband coverage expanding from 15% in 2010 to nearly 80% of the adult population today. However, only 22% of the population currently subscribes to mobile internet services. The Digital Pakistan initiative seeks to broaden the knowledge-based economy and promote socio-economic growth through digital technologies.
