PM Shehbaz Sharif urges digital wallet awareness for Ramadan relief

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called on relevant ministries, the central bank, and private partners to enhance public awareness about using digital wallets to ensure effective utilization of the Rs 20 billion ($71.4 million) Ramadan relief package. This initiative provides Rs5,000 ($17.87) to approximately 4 million families nationwide to support them during the holy month of Ramadan.

During a visit to the National Telecommunication Corporation Headquarters, Sharif was briefed that while around 2.8 million eligible accounts had been credited, only 683,000 accounts had seen withdrawals. He expressed concern over the 22% withdrawal rate, attributing it to a lack of public awareness. He urged the central bank governor to join the campaign to maximize the program’s reach.

Traditionally, Ramadan relief was administered through state-run utility stores offering essential commodities at reduced prices. However, issues like long queues, limited stock, and verification challenges led to the shift toward digital disbursement. Despite the move to digital wallets aiming to streamline the process, the current low withdrawal rates indicate a need for increased public education on accessing these funds.
