Weather alert for KP and Punjab: Heavy rains and snowfall expected March 12-16

The Provincial Disaster Management Authorities (PDMA) of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Punjab have issued warnings about anticipated heavy rains and snowfall from March 12 to 16, 2025. A westerly weather system is expected to enter northern Pakistan on March 9, intensify by March 12, and persist until March 16.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP): The PDMA has alerted district administrations to prepare for possible emergencies resulting from the forecasted weather conditions.

Punjab: The PDMA has advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel to these areas during this period and to stock essential items such as food and warm clothing.

Last month, parts of Pakistan experienced rainfall following a prolonged drought that adversely affected crops like wheat and potatoes. The monsoon season of 2022 brought torrential rains, leading to flash floods across the country. These floods resulted in over 1,700 fatalities and caused damages estimated at $33 billion, underscoring the nation’s vulnerability to climate change impacts.
