Zelensky to collaborate with Europe on Truce proposal for US following Trump dispute

Zelensky, European Leaders Seek Truce Terms Amid Trump Rift

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced plans to collaborate with European allies to define terms for a potential peace deal before presenting it to the U.S. This follows a high-level summit in London where 18 European allies pledged increased security spending and a coalition to enforce any ceasefire in Ukraine.

The summit took place amid uncertainty over continued U.S. support and heightened tensions following Trump’s public rebuke of Zelensky at the White House, raising fears of a U.S.-imposed settlement favoring Russia. In response, European leaders reaffirmed their commitment to Ukraine, with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron pledging to work on a truce proposal, which would include temporary ceasefires on air, sea, and energy infrastructure. Macron emphasized that no European troops would be deployed in Ukraine in the immediate future.

Trump’s administration has increasingly aligned with Moscow’s stance, with key officials suggesting Zelensky should step down to facilitate negotiations. U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson and Trump’s national security adviser Mike Waltz hinted at the need for a new Ukrainian leader to achieve peace. However, Zelensky reiterated his commitment to NATO membership, even suggesting he would resign if Ukraine secured its place in the alliance.

With Europe now taking a leading role in Ukraine’s defense strategy, European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen and Polish PM Donald Tusk emphasized the need for military preparedness and resistance against Russian aggression. Meanwhile, Zelensky signaled openness to negotiations with the U.S., including discussions on a mineral trade deal sought by Trump.
