Pak-Afghan officials unable to reach agreement on Torkham border reopening

Pakistani and Afghan security officials were unable to reach an agreement on reopening the Torkham border on Sunday, though both sides remained hopeful that the issue could be resolved within the week.

According to official sources at Torkham, border security officials from both countries met at Zero Point around midday. During the meeting, each side presented its stance while emphasizing the importance of honoring previous protocols regarding any modifications to the existing border structure.

Officials stated that Pakistan was ready to reopen the border; however, Afghan authorities requested additional time to consult with their higher officials before making a final decision.

Meanwhile, customs and immigration staff were called in on Sunday in anticipation of the border reopening, but they had to return as no agreement was reached.

Local sources reported that hundreds of returning Afghans gathered near the border, hoping to cross home. They waited throughout the day, but their expectations went unfulfilled.

In the meantime, a local youth organization arranged Iftar for the stranded Afghans at both Torkham and Landi Kotal. Officials are now awaiting a response from Afghan authorities with a positive update regarding the border reopening.
