The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) is encountering significant obstacles in launching 5G services nationwide. During a recent Senate Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecom meeting, officials highlighted that the deployment of 5G requires additional spectrum and a policy directive from the government. A consultant, engaged in November 2024, has submitted a report to guide this process.
Despite these challenges, the introduction of 5G is expected to enhance the speeds of existing 3G and 4G services, benefiting a broader range of subscribers. However, infrastructure upgrades, such as extending fiber optic connectivity to at least 40% of telecom towers, are essential for a widespread 5G rollout.
The Universal Service Fund (USF) has completed 63 projects over the past three years to provide telecom services in rural and remote areas. However, some regions, particularly in Balochistan, continue to face service disruptions due to security concerns.
The PTA is actively working to address these issues, aiming to facilitate a smooth transition to 5G technology and improve overall connectivity across Pakistan.
