The 800 MW Mohmand Dam Hydropower Project in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is on track to start generating affordable, clean energy by 2027. Construction, launched in 2019, is progressing steadily, with significant work underway at key locations, such as spillways, dams, and power tunnels.
This massive project, located on the River Swat, is designed to provide multiple benefits, including flood control, irrigation for large tracts of land, and sustainable hydropower generation. The concrete-faced rockfill dam will stand at 700 feet tall, ranking as the fifth highest of its kind worldwide.
Wapda Chairman, retired Lt Gen Sajjad Ghani, recently visited the site to review progress. He expressed satisfaction with advancements on spillways, cofferdams, and water diversion tunnels while urging teams to maintain momentum and quality standards. Excavation for key structures, such as the power tunnel and canals, continues actively.
The project is set to greatly enhance local irrigation systems and energy production, delivering long-term environmental and economic benefits while addressing some of the region’s pressing challenges.
