New York (Monitoring Desk): The United Nations Security Council will convene an emergency meeting on Monday to discuss growing international concerns over the U.S. military operation in Venezuela and potential risks to the international order.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres has warned that recent developments in Venezuela could set a dangerous precedent for international law. According to his spokesperson, the Secretary-General is deeply concerned that the U.S. action may destabilize the region and could violate principles of the UN Charter.
The emergency session was called at the request of Colombia, with support from China and Russia, while Venezuela has formally approached the Security Council as well.
The meeting will be held under the agenda of threats to international peace and security, during which the Secretary-General will provide council members with a detailed briefing on the situation.
