Damascus (Monitoring Desk): The Syrian Ministry of Defense announced that the Syrian Arab Army has assumed control of the Al-Shaddadi military base in the northeastern region from United States forces.
According to the ministry, the base was handed over to the Syrian army after coordination and liaison with US officials. The base is located in a suburban area of Hasakah, where US forces had been deployed as part of the international coalition against ISIS. A few days ago, the US also vacated the Al-Tanf base.
Historically, the Syrian Democratic Forces were key allies in the US-led coalition and played a crucial role in the 2019 territorial defeat of ISIS. Following the end of former President Bashar al-Assad’s rule in December 2024, Washington has improved relations with Syria’s new government.
Meanwhile, according to CentCom, between February 3 and 12, over 30 ISIS targets in Syria, including infrastructure and weapon caches, were struck. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Washington is satisfied with current developments in Syria but acknowledged that implementing agreements with the Kurdish minority and other groups will be challenging, requiring dialogue with multiple communities for political reconciliation.
