Protests in Manipur Turn Violent, 2 Killed and 10 Injured in Firing

Manipur (Monitoring Desk): Tensions have escalated once again in the Indian state of Manipur, where protests following political changes have turned violent. During demonstrations on February 5 and 6, the Kuki tribes blocked Imphal Chura Chandpur Road.

Security forces opened fire on the protesters, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and leaving ten others critically injured. Local analysts suggest that Hindu nationalism and preferential policies in state recruitment are further intensifying ethnic tensions.

Manipur has now joined the ranks of neglected northeastern states of India, including Nagaland and Mizoram, which have long-standing ethnic and political issues.
