Dhaka (Monitoring Desk) – A major political development has emerged in Bangladesh’s 13th general elections, as the Bangladesh Nationalist Party announced its readiness to form the government after securing a two-thirds majority, while the Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh came in second.
Party leaders stated that the new government will be established on February 15, forming a cabinet in coalition with allied parties. Jamaat-e-Islami is considered a strong rival.
According to British news agency Reuters, citing Bangladeshi channel Jamuna TV, unofficial results show that the BNP alliance has won 212 out of 300 seats, while the Jamaat-e-Islami alliance secured 70 seats. The National Citizens Party managed to win only five seats. Vote counting is ongoing, with turnout around 60 percent.
The day across the country began with the news that BNP is in a strong position to form the next government. Political circles are also speculating that party leader Tarique Rahman could emerge as a strong contender for the prime ministership.
