Pakistan vs Namibia Match to Decide Last Super 8 Spot, Cricket Fans’ Old Belief Revived

Namibia (Sports Desk): The Super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup 2026 is about to begin, with seven out of eight teams already confirmed. The eighth team will be determined by today’s match between Pakistan and Namibia.

In case of rain, both teams will earn one point each. However, if the match is completed, Pakistan must win to secure a spot. A loss would allow the United States cricket team to advance to the Super 8.

Interestingly, the Australian team, considered a favorite, has already been eliminated in the first round. This has sparked a recurring social media theory among Pakistani fans: whenever Australia exits early, Pakistan goes on to win the tournament.

Looking at historical data: Pakistan won its only ICC Cricket World Cup in 1992 while Australia was knocked out in the round-robin stage. In the 2009 T20 World Cup, Pakistan also emerged victorious while Australia failed to progress beyond the group stage. Pakistan’s 2017 Champions Trophy win coincided with another early Australian exit.

This has fueled fans’ belief that Pakistan could win this T20 World Cup as well if Australia is eliminated early. However, this is purely coincidental. Pakistan’s victories are independent of Australia’s performance. If there were a true correlation, Pakistan would have won the 1979 and 1983 World Cups despite Australia’s early exits, but Pakistan lost in the semifinals in both events. Interestingly, in the 2013 Champions Trophy, neither Australia nor Pakistan advanced beyond the group stage.
