Nobel Laureate Narges Mohammadi Sentenced to Seven and a Half Years in Iran

Tehran (Monitoring Desk): Nobel Peace Prize-winning human rights activist Narges Mohammadi has been sentenced to seven and a half years in prison for her long-standing struggle for women’s rights. According to international media, the Narges Foundation reported that the 53-year-old activist recently ended a week-long hunger strike but informed her lawyer via phone from prison that she has been handed a new sentence.

The Nobel laureate has been sentenced to six years in prison for “assembly and conspiracy against national security,” one and a half years for “propaganda against the government,” two years of internal exile, and an additional two-year travel ban. The Iranian Foreign Ministry has not issued any comment on the case.

Narges Mohammadi was arrested on December 12 after condemning the suspicious death of her lawyer, Khosrow Ali Kordi. Prosecutor Hassan Hemmatfar alleged that during a memorial ceremony in Mashhad, Mohammadi delivered inflammatory statements and encouraged attendees to chant slogans.

Mohammadi was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023 and has long been active in advocating for women’s rights and the abolition of the death penalty in Iran.
