New York (Monitoring Desk) – A historic moment is unfolding in New York today, January 1, 2026, as newly elected Mayor Zohran Mamdani is set to take the oath of office on the Holy Quran. Mamdani will be the first mayor in New York City’s history to be sworn in using the Islamic holy book, marking a milestone for the city’s diverse political landscape

The inauguration will feature two ceremonies. In a private midnight event, Mamdani will swear the oath on his grandfather’s personal Quran and a rare historic Quran once owned by renowned Black historian Arturo Schomburg, symbolizing New York’s multicultural identity

Later in the day, a public ceremony will be held outside City Hall, where U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders and other dignitaries, including current Mayor Eric Adams and members of Congress, are expected to attend as Mamdani again takes the oath on the Quran
