New Delhi (Monitoring Desk): Kashmiri students in India are reportedly facing alleged discrimination and a sense of insecurity, leading to a sharp decline in their enrollment in some states. According to a report by The New Indian Express, the number of Kashmiri students in Uttarakhand has decreased by approximately 67%. A few years ago, around 6,000 Kashmiri students were enrolled in the state, a figure that has now dropped to about 2,000.
The report notes that following the 2019 Pulwama attack, incidents of harassment and discriminatory behavior against Kashmiri students increased, prompting some students and their families to move to other states or discontinue their education due to safety concerns.
Experts warn that rising trends of religious and ethnic divisions in the current political climate are impacting educational institutions. Critics have questioned the policies of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, while the government has repeatedly denied the allegations.
