Italy Bars US Military Planes from Using Sicily Base for Middle East Missions

Italy (Monitoring Desk) – Italy has prohibited US military aircraft from landing at its Sicily airbase for operations linked to the Middle East.

Media reports indicate that the decision concerns Naval Air Station Sigonella, a strategic hub often used for NATO and US missions. US bomber planes were scheduled to land at the base before heading to the Middle East, but Italy refused permission.

Sources say the move was taken because the US request did not follow proper procedures for base usage. Under Italian law, prior consultation with Rome and formal approval are required for using military bases, and the absence of these led to the denial. The Ministry of Defense has not yet issued an official statement on the matter.
