India’s Dependence on Russian Oil Becoming Costly, Major Increase in U.S. Tariffs Likely

New Delhi (Monitoring Desk): India’s growing dependence on cheap Russian oil has begun to create new diplomatic and trade challenges. According to international media reports, the United States is seriously considering a significant increase in tariffs on Indian products, which could place further pressure on India’s economy.

According to India Today, the U.S. imposed an additional 25 percent tariff on certain Indian imports last year, and due to an extra 25 percent penalty linked to purchases of Russian oil, the total duty on some products reached up to 50 percent.

Reports state that in December 2025, U.S. officials also indicated the possibility of imposing new tariffs on certain agricultural products, including Indian rice, leading to a slowdown in trade negotiations between the two countries.

Analysts say that rising trade tariffs and fears of global sanctions have raised new questions about India’s economic model. While the search for cheaper energy sources provided India with short-term relief, experts warn that this strategy could pose diplomatic challenges in the long term.

At the domestic level, debate over economic imbalance is also intensifying. Reports indicate that the wealth of major business groups in India has increased significantly, while ordinary citizens face economic pressure due to rising inflation and everyday expenses.

Experts stress that under the current circumstances, India needs to balance its trade and energy policies to safeguard its commercial interests in the global market.
