Bogota (Monitoring Desk): Colombian President Gustavo Petro has warned that Colombia is prepared to take up arms to defend its sovereignty if the country faces any form of threat or aggression, responding to recent statements by former US President Donald Trump.
In a message posted on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), President Petro said that although he had previously vowed never to take up arms again, the current regional situation may compel him to reconsider in order to safeguard the nation.
His remarks come at a time of rising political tensions in Latin America following a US military operation over the weekend that resulted in the detention of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.
It is noteworthy that Donald Trump had recently used harsh and derogatory language against the Colombian president and warned him to “watch himself,” further escalating regional concerns.
