Pakistan’s Tax System Faces Dilemma Between Immediate Revenue and Reforms

Karachi (Commerce Desk): Pakistan’s tax system is once again at a critical juncture, as the government must decide whether to prioritize immediate revenue collection or expand the tax base for long-term economic stability.

Experts say that for decades, the country’s economic policies have revolved around fiscal pressure, the influence of creditors, and revenue targets, often sidelining fundamental reforms. Recently, following a court ruling on supertax, concerns have emerged in the business community over the issuance of immediate recovery notices by tax authorities.

Pakistan’s tax system primarily consists of direct and indirect taxes. Direct taxes include income tax, while indirect taxes cover sales tax, customs duties, and federal excise duties.
