Mahira Khan opens up about her struggle with depression: “It’s a Disease”

Mahira Khan Opens Up About Her Battle with Depression and Importance of Self-Love

Mahira Khan has bravely shared her personal struggles with mental health, particularly the “dark” period when she was battling depression. The actress also encouraged anyone experiencing depression to seek professional help.

In a recent appearance on Aamna Haider Isani’s podcast, Inner Star, Khan spoke about how mental health is often discussed on the surface but is difficult to address deeply. Recalling her own experiences, she explained that during her most challenging times, she couldn’t comprehend the praise others gave her for her seemingly perfect life.

She emphasized that depression is a disease, describing it as a chemical imbalance. While acknowledging that certain triggers can contribute, she stated that conditions like depression, bipolarity, and manic depression are medical issues that require treatment. Khan shared that medication helped her during her toughest times, supported by her close-knit circle, including her family, friends, and her faith.

The Humsafar star stressed the importance of having a solid support system, saying that having people who care for you through dark moments is vital. She encouraged people to open up about their struggles with mental health, as it can help detach the shame often attached to such issues. Khan revealed that many individuals have approached her for advice and guidance, asking about the resources that helped her. She advocated for seeking professional help, as there is “good help” available.

Khan also highlighted the significance of recognizing personal triggers and learning how to navigate them. As she turns 40, the actress finds inspiration in women like Bushra Ansari and Atiqa Odho, who continue to thrive, nurture themselves, and flourish even after fulfilling their responsibilities as mothers.

For Khan, self-love is essential to personal reinvention, and she encourages women to prioritize their well-being. She shared how her understanding of self-care grew after her marriage to Salim Karim, noting that taking regular breaks and traveling became an important part of her life. Khan also encouraged women to engage in activities that bring them joy, whether it’s gardening, cooking, or simply enjoying a favorite show.

Her message is clear: “Do whatever gives you joy, no matter your age.”
