The government has drafted the Cybercrime Amendment Bill, which includes severe penalties for those found guilty of spreading fake news. Under the proposed legislation, individuals who disseminate false information could face up to five years in prison or a fine of up to Rs1 million.
The bill also calls for the creation of a Digital Rights Protection Authority, which would have the power to block or remove harmful content from social media platforms and issue directives to law enforcement or individuals to take down such material.
The authority would focus on removing content that incites hatred against the state or its institutions, as well as addressing threats, false accusations, and pornography.
Those who intentionally spread misinformation, stir fear, or create distrust would face the same penalties—up to five years in prison or a Rs1 million fine. The proposed authority would be led by a chairman and include six members. Any decisions made by this body could be challenged in a designated tribunal.
